The building went up in 1911, which makes it one of the oldest cinemas still working in Britain, and it kept its proscenium arch through everything that happened afterwards. Soho House reopened it in April 2002 as their first public cinema and took out all two hundred and forty seats: what is there now is ninety-eight leather armchairs with footstools, two long sofas at the back, and beds in the front row.
The bar sells cocktails and wine rather than popcorn, and the screen is built to open outwards past the arch at the start of every film to whatever width the print needs, which is a piece of theatre in itself. The programme is new releases with seasons around them.
