Two firms merged: Gieves, who outfitted naval officers from 1785 and were at Trafalgar, and Hawkes, who made military caps from 1771. The military connection is not decorative - the house still cuts uniforms, and the ceremonial work is done on the premises.
The building was the Royal Geographical Society's headquarters, which is why Livingstone lay in state in it and why the address is the one every other tailor measures itself against.
