The process takes months. A last is cut from hornbeam to the shape of the individual foot, the upper is closed by hand, the sole welted, and the last stored on the premises against the next pair - the cellars hold thousands, including some for people long dead.
The St James's Street shop is the original family firm, founded by a Cornish bootmaker who won a medal at the 1862 exhibition. Prices are what you would expect and the wait is measured in months.
