Arthur Lasenby Liberty opened in 1875 selling ornaments, fabric and objects from Japan and the East, and the shop became the commercial engine of the Arts and Crafts movement and then of Art Nouveau - which in Italy is still called Stile Liberty.
The Great Marlborough Street building went up in 1924 from the timbers of two broken-up ships, HMS Impregnable and HMS Hindustan, around three light wells with galleries running round them. The fabric department upstairs is the reason to come: Liberty's own prints, sold by the metre, and a haberdashery that has no equal in London.
