Faris Sheibani founded Qima in 2016 to buy coffee straight from smallholding farmers in Yemen, where the trade had all but stopped working. He took the principle from his grandfather, who opened a tea and coffee shack in Aden at seventeen and built schools, roads and clinics alongside the company he grew out of it, on the line that they were makers of lives rather than of trade. Every cup sold here funds a young coffee tree for a farmer. Yemen is where cultivated coffee drinking began, and almost nowhere else in London sells it as itself rather than as something to blend into other things. The pastry counter is given equal billing and draws on the same places the coffee does, with za'atar, tahini and harissa in the baking.
