Adam brothers on the south and east sides, in Portland stone rather than the usual stucco, and a garden in the middle that was paved over and pedestrianised in the 1970s — so the square is quieter than any of its neighbours and the traffic goes round. Virginia Woolf lived at number 29 and George Bernard Shaw before her; Whistler and Roger Fry both worked here.
The garden is private; the plaques at 29 and 33 are on the street.
