Kingston Ancient Market

Twenty-eight stalls under a gilded Queen Anne in a market place with records from the early 1200s, seven days a week.

Kingston has held a market on this ground since at least the early thirteenth century, and the square still looks the part: the Market House of 1840, once the town hall, stands in the middle with a gilded statue of Queen Anne of 1706 on its front, the Shrubsole memorial fountain of 1882 beside it and timbered and Georgian fronts all round. The permanent stalls are the traditional trades, a florist, a fishmonger, greengrocers and an artisan baker, with street food from half a dozen cuisines cooking at lunchtime, and the whole thing runs every day of the week. The Coronation Stone, on which the Saxon kings were crowned, is round the corner by the Guildhall.
