A kilometre of stalls down the High Street since 1885, the longest street market in Europe, five days a week.
Marsh Street was a country lane until the railway came, and the market that opened along it in 1885 has grown to fill all but the last hundred metres of what became the High Street: something like five hundred pitches of fruit and vegetables, fish, fabric, clothes and household goods, with the cafés behind them running from Caribbean curried goat to pie and mash and jellied eels. Saturday is the day, when the antiques, the street food and the makers join the regular traders and the pavements are shoulder to shoulder; Sunday has a farmers' market in the Town Square instead. The council that owns it calls it the longest outdoor street market in Europe, and only Rome's Porta Portese has a claim against that.
