The priory church of St Mary Overie was the parish church of the Bankside players. Edmund Shakespeare, the playwright's younger brother and an actor, was buried here in 1607, and the dramatists John Fletcher and Philip Massinger lie in one grave in the choir. In the south aisle an alabaster Shakespeare of 1912 reclines against a carved Bankside skyline under a window of scenes from the plays, and John Gower, Chaucer's friend and the poet of Confessio Amantis, has a painted tomb in the north aisle with his head resting on his three books.
