'In Southwark at the Tabard as I lay': the inn where the Canterbury Tales begins, kept by Harry Bailly, stood here from 1307 until it was pulled down in 1873, having burned and been rebuilt as the Talbot in 1676. A plaque in Talbot Yard, put up in 2003, marks the site; the George next door, the last galleried inn on the road, shows what it looked like. The pilgrims set out from here in April for Canterbury, and the road they took is Borough High Street.
