John Heminges and Henry Condell were Shakespeare's fellow players in the King's Men and, seven years after his death, they gathered thirty-six plays into the First Folio of 1623. Eighteen of them, Macbeth, The Tempest and Twelfth Night among them, had never been printed and would otherwise have been lost. Both men were churchwardens here and are buried in the churchyard. The 1896 memorial carries a bust of Shakespeare above an open Folio, and its inscription says of the two that 'to their disinterested affection the world owes all that it calls Shakespeare'.
