John Milton was buried here in 1674 beside his father, having written Paradise Lost in a house on nearby Bunhill Row; a statue of him stands inside. Oliver Cromwell was married at the altar in 1620, John Foxe of the Book of Martyrs is buried here, and Lancelot Andrewes, who oversaw the King James Bible, was the vicar. Bombed out in 1940 and restored inside the Barbican's concrete, it keeps a stretch of the Roman and medieval city wall beside it and its bells ring out over the lake.
