Thackeray boarded at Charterhouse School from 1822, hated it, and used it under the name Grey Friars in The Newcomes, whose old soldier ends his days as a pensioner in the almshouse and dies saying 'Adsum' as the school bell rings. The school has gone to Surrey but the Tudor mansion built on a Carthusian monastery is still an almshouse for the Brothers, with its courts, its great hall and its chapel, where Thackeray's memorial is.
