Barnet was where the Great North Road climbed its first hill out of London, which made it a town of coaching inns, and in 1471 it was where the Wars of the Roses turned: on Easter Sunday, in fog on the heath north of the town, Edward IV beat the Lancastrians and Warwick the Kingmaker was killed as he ran for his horse. The museum, in an early Georgian house on Wood Street, was founded in 1938 by the local record society and is still run entirely by its volunteers, with rooms on the battle, the archaeology, the inns and coaches, the horse fair chartered by Elizabeth I in 1588 that gave rhyming slang its word for hair, costume and lace, and the town at war. The Physic Well, the spa that drew Pepys out from London, opens one Saturday a month. Entry is free.
