Trent Park House of Secrets

The bugged mansion where Hitler's captured generals talked freely for three years while German-Jewish refugees in the basement wrote it all down.

Philip Sassoon's house parties here in the 1930s had Churchill, Chaplin and the Prince of Wales; from 1942 the same rooms held fifty-nine German generals in comfort, with a billiard table, a garden and newspapers, and microphones in the light fittings, the skirting, the plant pots and the benches. In the basement the Secret Listeners - most of them Jewish refugees from Germany and Austria in British uniform - recorded and transcribed what the generals said to each other about the V-weapons, the state of the Reich and the murder of the Jews, evidence that reached the Allies years before the camps were opened. The museum that opened in July 2026 shows both halves: the state rooms restored to their 1930s look, and the listeners' rooms below.
