Ben Uri began in Whitechapel in 1915, when the Russian émigré artist Lazar Berson founded an art society for the Jewish immigrant craftsmen and painters that the established societies would not admit, and named it after the craftsman who built the Ark of the Covenant. A century on it holds about a thousand works by some four hundred artists from forty countries, and its subject has widened from Jewish to émigré art of every kind: David Bomberg and Mark Gertler of the Whitechapel Boys, Frank Auerbach, who arrived as a child refugee in 1939, Chagall, and the artists who came later from elsewhere. Since 2002 it has shown them in rotation in a small gallery on Boundary Road in St John's Wood, and it has put its whole collection and archive online, the first record of its kind in the country.
