The Marylebone Cricket Club has run cricket's laws since 1787 and collected its relics almost as long, and its museum behind the Pavilion, opened in 1953, is the oldest sporting museum in the world. The object everyone comes for is the smallest: the Ashes urn, four inches of terracotta given to the England captain Ivo Bligh in Australia in 1883 to hold the ashes of a burnt bail, a joke about English cricket's death that became the name of the oldest rivalry in sport, and which never travels; the winners get a replica. Around it are W.G. Grace's bat and cap, the scorebooks of famous matches, paintings of the game from the village green to the Test, the sparrow killed in flight by a ball at Lord's in 1936, stuffed with the ball, and the kit and memories of the great players. It is seen on the Lord's tour, which also takes in the Long Room the players walk through, the dressing rooms and the media centre that looks like a spaceship, and runs most days when there is no match.
