He wrote Oliver Twist and Nicholas Nickleby in the two and a half years he lived at 48 Doughty Street. The rooms are furnished with his own belongings, including the desk he wrote at. The Dickens Fellowship bought the house in 1923 to stop it being demolished and opened it two years later.
