Silent Night Visit

The ten rooms by candlelight and nothing else, walked through without speaking.

ImmersiveHistory

At Dennis Severs' House.

The same house as the day visit with the electric light off, so what is left is the candles and the open fires that are part of the work. You go round without talking, which was the condition Dennis Severs set for his own house: look rather than read, and take the smell of it - perfume, woodsmoke, cloves, tobacco - as part of what there is to see. There are no labels anywhere in the building.

Four evenings this autumn: Friday 9, Friday 16 and Friday 23 October, and Saturday 31 October, with timed entry between 17:00 and 20:15 and forty-five minutes inside. Worth knowing before booking - there is no wheelchair access and the stairs are steep and dimly lit, there are no lavatories in the house, the open fires make the smoke heavy enough to matter if you have a chest condition, nuts are used and displayed throughout, and no photography is allowed. Under-16s need one adult each, and latecomers are not admitted.
