The regiment raised at the Tower in 1685, told inside the Tower itself.
The Royal Fusiliers were raised at the Tower of London in 1685 to guard the guns of the Ordnance, and were armed with the fusil, a flintlock musket that could be carried near barrels of gunpowder without a lit match, which gave the regiment its name. The Tower has been its home ever since. The museum is in the old officers' mess building on the north side of the inner ward and runs from that founding through the American war, the Western Front and the Second World War to the regiment's successor today: uniforms and the coloured plates they were painted from, medals, photographs, letters home and war diaries, and the silver from the mess. Entry is included in a Tower of London ticket.
