The Corporation of London has collected pictures since 1670, and this is where it shows them: a gallery beside the Guildhall, completed in 1999 by Richard Gilbert Scott to replace the one that burned in 1941 with 164 works inside it. The collection is Victorian London at its most confident, Millais, Tissot, Rossetti and the story-pictures the City's businessmen gave it, with Copley's vast Siege of Gibraltar, painted for the Corporation in the 1780s and so large that the building was designed around it. What nobody planned was underneath. When the site was dug in 1988 the builders found the walls of London's Roman amphitheatre, lost since the fourth century, and the gallery was redrawn to keep it: in the basement the surviving stone of the eastern entrance stands in the dark with the rest of the arena traced in green light, and the outline of the whole ring is marked in a black curve across Guildhall Yard outside.
