Hackney's museum is one free gallery inside the library building on Mare Street, and it is built around the idea that the borough has always been somewhere people arrived. Its centrepiece is the logboat, a dugout made from a single tree trunk in the Anglo-Saxon centuries and found in the mud of the Lea at Clapton in 1987, and around it the cases follow the Huguenots, the Jewish East End, the Windrush generation, the Vietnamese, Turkish and Kurdish communities and everyone since, in their own objects and voices. The borough's radicals and the Hackney Empire have corners of their own, and the temporary exhibitions are drawn from the same neighbours.
