The government gave the site in 1944, in exchange for land in Cairo for an Anglican cathedral, and Frederick Gibberd's building opened in 1977: a golden dome over a plain white hall that holds several thousand, with a minaret beside it. The main hall has no furniture and one enormous chandelier, and the galleries above are for women. An Islamic Cultural Centre runs alongside it.
Open for the five daily prayers. Guided group visits run Monday to Thursday and are booked in advance through the cultural centre.
