Robert Opie's twelve thousand tins, wrappers and adverts, walked in date order down a Time Tunnel from Victorian soap to last year's cereal.
Robert Opie began keeping packaging at sixteen, with a Munchies wrapper he could not bring himself to throw away, and never stopped; his collection filled a museum at Gloucester Docks from 1984 and came to Notting Hill in 2005, since 2015 in a converted building on Lancaster Road. The heart of it is the Time Tunnel, a single corridor of some 12,000 objects in strict date order: Victorian soap and mustard tins, the first branded cereals, wartime ration packs, coronation mugs, Beatles bubble gum, seventies crisps, and the toys, magazines and adverts of every decade since. It is a history of ordinary life that nobody else thought worth recording, and people come out of it quieter than they went in. There is a café and a garden, and a changing exhibition alongside, Branding Britain until October 2026.
