A Victorian household kept down to the wallpaper: the Punch cartoonist's house where the Victorian Society was founded.

Edward Linley Sambourne drew for Punch for forty years, and when he and his wife Marion moved into this new Kensington terrace house in 1875 they decorated it in the Aesthetic taste of the moment: Morris wallpapers, sunflowers in the stained glass, blue-and-white Chinese porcelain on every ledge, and his own drawings and the photographs he took of models, and of himself, posing for the cartoons. Then nobody changed it. Their son kept it as it was until 1946, his sister after him, and in 1958 her daughter Anne, Countess of Rosse, founded the Victorian Society in the drawing room to save exactly this kind of thing from the wreckers. The borough opened it as a museum in 1980, and it is one of the most complete middle-class interiors of the period anywhere, visited on your own or with a guide from Wednesday to Sunday.
