Croydon had no museum until 1995, though it had a collection: the pottery and porcelain that Raymond Riesco, a local businessman, gathered over a lifetime and left to the town in 1964, and two thousand works of art. When the council built the Clocktower, its arts and library complex beside the town hall, it spent five years asking residents what a museum should be, and the answer was one told in their own words, with objects lent or chosen by local people and captioned by them, from Anglo-Saxon brooches to the airport that was London's until 1959. It reopened under its present name in 2006. The Riesco Gallery on the lower floor holds a thousand years of Chinese ceramics alongside the borough's Roman and Anglo-Saxon finds. Entry is free.
