Croydon's brick tower mill of 1854, its two pairs of stones and most of its machinery intact, opened by its Friends on the first Sunday of the month in summer.
Richard Alwen built it in 1854 to replace a timber post mill of 1808 that had burned down, and it ground corn for about thirty-five years before the wind trade gave out around 1890. It kept its works, which is the rare thing: the cap and fantail, the great spur wheel and both pairs of millstones are all in place, and the tour goes up through them. Croydon Council owns it and the Friends of Shirley Windmill show it, with extra open days for National Mills Weekend in May and Open House in September.
