The house was built about 1722 for Francis Hosier, an admiral who died of yellow fever blockading Porto Bello, and from 1748 it belonged to the Earl of Chesterfield, who wrote the letters of advice to his son that made him a byword for worldly manners; in the nineteenth century it was the official home of the Ranger of Greenwich Park, which gave it its name. Since 2002 it has held the Wernher Collection. Julius Wernher came from Darmstadt, made one of the great fortunes of the Kimberley diamond fields, and spent it on what he called the splendidly ugly: medieval ivories, Limoges enamels, Renaissance jewels and bronzes, majolica, Dutch pictures and tapestries of Chinese scenes, nearly seven hundred pieces hung and cased as densely as he kept them. The outside of the house is the Bridgerton family's home in the Netflix series, which is why the lawn is photographed more often than the ivories. It opens on set dates.
