The Royal Academy of Music, Britain's oldest conservatoire, keeps its museum in York Gate, the pair of stuccoed lodges John Nash built in 1822 as the gate into Regent's Park, across the road from the Academy's home on Marylebone Road. Three galleries over three floors: the story of the Academy since 1822, with one of Henry Wood's batons and letters from Mendelssohn; the strings, a collection of Cremonese instruments with Stradivari, Amati and Guarneri among them, kept in playing condition and lent to students rather than left in cases; and the pianos, with a workshop where instruments are restored in view. Entry is free, and practice comes through the walls.
