Founded in 1822 and in this building on the Marylebone Road since 1911, it has taught, among a great many others, Simon Rattle, Felicity Lott, Harrison Birtwistle and Elton John. Students come from more than sixty countries.
Two things are open to anyone. The concerts - recitals, chamber groups, opera scenes, orchestral programmes - run through term and a large number are free. And the museum holds the Academy's instrument collection, including Cremonese violins and a room of keyboards, which is free and takes very little time to walk round.
