Six hangars on the site of the old London Aerodrome at Hendon, free, and the aircraft are the argument. Hangar 1 tells the RAF's first hundred years and holds the Short Sunderland, a flying boat big enough to walk through. Hangar 2 covers the First World War in the air, from the earliest flights on this same field to the founding of the RAF in 1918, with the good-luck charms pilots carried. Hangars 3 to 5 are the deepest: the Battle of Britain, bombers, seaplanes, trainers and helicopters, with the Avro Lancaster 'S for Sugar' that flew 137 operations, and two standing exhibitions on Bomber Command and on the RAF between the wars. Hangar 6 brings it to the present through the people who served in it. Sitting in a Spitfire costs extra; everything else does not. Hangars close for conservation from time to time, so ring ahead for a particular aircraft.
