William Rossiter, who ran a working men's college on Blackfriars Road, believed that the poor of south London deserved pictures as much as anyone, and after twenty years of free shows in libraries he built them a gallery on Peckham Road that opened on 4 May 1891, with Leighton, Burne-Jones and Watts behind him and Gladstone as its first president. It has been free ever since. Since the 1990s it has been one of the sharpest contemporary galleries in the city, showing artists early, from Tracey Emin and Gilbert & George to the young painters and sculptors it commissions now, and in 2018 it took over the Victorian fire station across the road for more galleries, an archive, a kitchen and studios. Behind the main gallery is a garden designed by the Mexican artist Gabriel Orozco. Entry is free, and Wednesday evenings run late.
