A terraced house in East Dulwich covered inside and out in mosaic, dolls' heads and painted words by the man who lives in it, open one Saturday a month by booking.
Stephen Wright, a textile designer, began decorating his house on Melbourne Grove in 1998 as something to do with his partner, Donald Jones; when Jones died a few years later, and then both of Wright's parents, the decorating became the answer to grief and never stopped. Every surface of the house and garden is now covered: mosaic floors of broken china, walls of dolls' heads, false teeth, bottle tops and toys from car-boot sales, shrines to the dead, and painted text everywhere recording what he was thinking on the day he wrote it. It is outsider art in the proper sense, made by one person for himself with no thought of a gallery, and there is nothing else like it in London. He opens it about ten times a year, usually on the last Saturday of the month and never in the depth of winter, and every visit is booked in advance.
