The grandest private house left in London, built for the Spencers in the 1750s and looking over Green Park, open on Sundays.

John Spencer, made Earl Spencer in 1765, commissioned this house in 1756 to announce his arrival among the great families, and it is the finest London town house of its century still standing. John Vardy, a pupil of William Kent, built the Palladian shell and the Palm Room, where gilded palm trees grow up the walls; in 1758 James 'Athenian' Stuart, just back from measuring the ruins of Greece, took over the interiors and gave the first floor the Painted Room, the earliest complete neoclassical room in Europe. The Spencers lived here until 1895 and let it out afterwards; Diana, Princess of Wales, was born into the family that built it. In 1985 Lord Rothschild's company took the lease and spent nine years putting the eight state rooms back as they were, with furniture and pictures lent back from the Royal Collection and the V&A, and the house opens on Sundays for guided tours of about an hour.
Access is by guided tour on Sundays only, and the house closes for part of the year.
