Built for the first Earl Spencer by John Vardy and James Stuart, it is the great surviving eighteenth-century town house of London, with a Palm Room of gilded palm trees and a painted room that was the first neoclassical interior in Europe. The family let it in 1926 and Lord Rothschild's company restored it in the 1980s to a standard the Spencers could never have afforded; the eight state rooms open on Sundays. Diana grew up at Althorp, but this is the house the name belongs to in London, a few doors from St James's Palace.
