Britain's first public gallery for photography alone, since 1971, on several floors behind Oxford Street.

Sue Davies opened the Photographers' Gallery on 14 January 1971 in a former Lyons tea bar on Great Newport Street, and it was the first public gallery in Britain given to photography, at a time when the art museums did not collect it. Its first show was Cornell Capa's The Concerned Photographer, and over the decades it brought Robert Capa, Sebastião Salgado, Andreas Gursky and Juergen Teller to British audiences and gave early rooms to Martin Parr, Nick Knight and Corinne Day. In 2008 it moved to a converted warehouse on Ramillies Street, rebuilt in 2012 into galleries over several floors with a bookshop and a print sales room at the bottom. It runs the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize, the main award in the field since 1996, whose shortlist is shown here every year.
