George Frideric Handel was the first tenant of 25 Brook Street when it was built in 1723, and he lived and worked in it for thirty-six years, until his death upstairs in 1759: Messiah was written here in twenty-four days in 1741, with most of the operas and oratorios, rehearsed on the harpsichords and the little chamber organ in the front room while singers came and went from the street. In 1968 Jimi Hendrix took the top-floor flat of number 23 with his girlfriend Kathy Etchingham, learned who his neighbour had been, bought the records and called it the first home of his own. The museum restored Handel's rooms in 2001 and Hendrix's in 2016, down to the bedspread he was photographed on, and in 2023 opened Handel's ground floor and kitchen for the first time, so the whole of both houses is now shown together. Live music in Handel's rooms, on his kind of instruments, runs through the week.
