One of the finest smock mills in England, built for a farmer in 1803 and returned to working order for 2023, open on set days through the season.
James Nokes, a local farmer, had it built in 1803: a smock mill, an octagonal weatherboarded tower on a brick base, so called because it looks like a countryman in his smock. It worked until 1934 and was bought for the public by the council in 1937, and after a long decline the Upminster Windmill Preservation Trust took it apart, repaired it and put it back together with money from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, reopening it in 2023 with a visitor centre alongside. It is protected at the higher historic grade for the completeness of its machinery, and on open days the volunteers take you up through all five floors.
