These were the grounds of a country house, and they still feel like it. Formal lawns and a sunken garden lie near the top, and the slope below them is planted with azaleas, rhododendrons and camellias that come out together in May. There is an aviary, a herb garden and a tree collection worth walking round on its own. Merton council took the park on in 1949 and it is historically protected in its own right, not merely as the setting for the house. Wimbledon Village is ten minutes away, and on most days you will have the place largely to yourself.
The park closes at dusk and neither the council nor the Friends publish a clock time for it.
