The largest of the Royal Parks, grazed by deer since 1637 and still more heath and ancient oak than lawn. It is a National Nature Reserve, and the oaks are why: the dead wood standing in them supports stag beetles and a long list of insects that have almost nowhere else left to live. Keep fifty metres back from the deer in the autumn rut and again when the calves come in June. The Isabella Plantation, a woodland garden inside the park, is at its loudest in azalea season in late April.

Those are the pedestrian gates, which stand open day and night except during the six-week deer culls in November and early December and again in February and early March: through those weeks they are locked from 8pm to 7.30am, apart from Friday and Saturday nights. Vehicle gates open at 7.30am, an hour earlier in summer time, and close at dusk.
