A square the size of a small park, laid out in the 1630s and kept open ever since: plane trees, lawns, a bandstand, and three hard courts that double as netball courts - no floodlights, so play finishes when the light does. Camden run it and the gates open at half past seven in the morning.
What surrounds it is much of the reason to stop. Sir John Soane's Museum fills three houses on the north side, the Royal College of Surgeons the south, and Lincoln's Inn is through the gates on the east. The square is the lunch hour of the legal quarter made visible - barristers, students and everybody who works in the buildings round it, on the grass from noon.
It is also the only garden in this part of Holborn that keeps ordinary hours. The Inns' own gardens open to the public for two or three hours at lunchtime on weekdays and are shut the rest of the time, which is why this is where people actually sit. If you want to see the private ones as well, they can be done in a single lunchtime: the Inns of Court garden walk strings four of them together in a mile.
