Lincoln's Inn Gardens

Eleven acres behind Chancery Lane, with a parkland at the north end you can sit in all day and a lawn you can picnic on in summer.

The North Gardens are the part of Lincoln's Inn to head for: parkland rather than bedding, with paths and benches open the whole time the Inn's gates are, which on a weekday is eight in the morning until seven at night. From April to September the main lawn is opened for picnicking between noon and half past two, with the reasonable request that you remember it is somebody's workplace - no ball games, no shouting.

The smaller pieces are worth finding. The Kitchen Garden sits just off New Square. The Benchers' Border was replanted in 2019 around yew topiary cones, in reds, yellows and oranges chosen against the red brick of the Great Hall, and a York stone path runs through it. The MCR Terrace is planted with hardy palms and succulents, which is not what anybody expects here, and woodland beds wrap round the Library.

There has been a garden on this ground since at least 1445, when the Inn's cook Richard Bennett grew food in the Long Garden to the north of the buildings; west of it lay the Coneygarth, a rougher piece where people walked and rabbits were caught for the pot.

The main lawn of the North Gardens is opened for picnics from April to September, 12:00 to 14:30; the paths, benches and Cherry Tree Bank are open whenever the gates are. Only residents' dogs are allowed in the Inn.
