Mount Street Gardens

A walled garden behind Mount Street, sheltered enough for palms and mimosa, and lined with benches.

The burial ground of St George's Hanover Square until 1854, and a garden since. Buildings enclose it on all four sides, which shelters it enough that London planes grow here alongside Canary Island date palms and an Australian mimosa that flowers in February. The benches are its other distinction: most carry plaques put up by Americans who spent time in Mayfair and wanted to be remembered on the spot, and there are enough of them to sit down whatever the hour. The Jesuit church of the Immaculate Conception opens onto one end and the Grosvenor Chapel onto the other.
