When Millwall Dock was dug in the 1860s the mud dredged from it was pumped across East Ferry Road and dumped on the fields beyond, a pneumatic system of the dock engineer's own design that stank so badly Poplar's council fought it for years, and the mud shoot gave the ground its name. It lay wild for a century, then in 1974 the Greater London Council marked it for a high-rise estate and the Island rose against the plan; the campaign won, the Mudchute Association was formed in 1977 and the farm followed. It is the largest urban farm in Europe by its own borough's reckoning: more than a hundred animals, rare-breed sheep, pigs, cattle and llamas on the grass, the concrete of a wartime anti-aircraft battery still on the hill, and Canary Wharf filling the sky behind the paddocks.
