The sheltered water of the West India and Millwall docks, hemmed in by the tallest buildings in the country - the one location where the view is entirely vertical. In winter they run the Winter Pod, an enclosed boat with a heated seat, which makes this the only one of the four that is a good idea in January. Five minutes from Canary Wharf on both the Underground and the DLR. Self-drive electric boats you steer yourself - no licence, no crew, no instructor sitting with you. Eight people, a table in the middle for a picnic, a silent motor and a top speed of 3.5mph, which is about walking pace. Open daily from 09:30 until sunset, weather permitting, so the closing time moves through the year; the booking system has the day's actual hours.
