Charles I enclosed it for hunting in 1637 and six hundred deer still graze it. In May the azaleas of the Isabella Plantation are the draw instead. White Lodge in the middle, a Georgian hunting lodge, was the birthplace of the future Edward VIII in 1894 and the first home of the Duke and Duchess of York, the Queen's parents, after their wedding in 1923; it is the Royal Ballet School now. King Henry's Mound has the protected view of St Paul's ten miles off.

Those are the pedestrian gates, which stand open day and night except during the six-week deer culls in November and early December and again in February and early March: through those weeks they are locked from 8pm to 7.30am, apart from Friday and Saturday nights. Vehicle gates open at 7.30am, an hour earlier in summer time, and close at dusk.
