Notable building
The Sekforde opened in 1829 and served for a hundred and seventy-six years without closing once. Chris Dyson Architects took it apart and put it back between 2015 and 2018, and the work won two Royal Institute of British Architects awards, one for the restoration and one for the sustainability, with a commendation from the Campaign for Real Ale on top.
The sustainability is not a gesture. A ground source heat pump does both the heating and the cooling, and the pub puts its consumption at fifteen per cent of what a conventional pub its size would use. Above ground it is the curved end of a yellow-brick Georgian terrace with the bar wrapped round the corner, three storeys of it, tables out on the pavement, and a Sunday roast it makes a point of.
