Henry VIII and both his daughters were born in the palace that stood here; Wren, Hawksmoor and Vanbrugh built the Royal Hospital for Seamen over its footprint, in two symmetrical halves so the Queen's House behind kept its view of the river, and the Navy trained its officers here until 1998. The colonnades and courts have stood in for Buckingham Palace and half the capitals of Europe in The Crown, Bridgerton and Les Misérables; the Painted Hall, Thornhill's forty thousand square feet of baroque ceiling, is the ticketed part and the one to lie on the floor for.
