Cromwell won the civil war against Charles I, sat on the court that condemned him, and ruled as Lord Protector from 1653 until his death in 1658 - offered the crown in 1657 and refusing it after six weeks of thinking about it. Two years after he died the monarchy came back, and Charles II's Parliament had his corpse exhumed, hanged at Tyburn and beheaded; the head went on a pole above Westminster Hall, which is the building behind this statue, and stayed there about twenty years. Hamo Thornycroft's bronze of 1899 puts him back on the same ground, upright.
