The square was laid out in 1868 and has been filling with bronze since. Churchill, by Ivor Roberts-Jones in 1973, stands hunched at the north-east corner facing the Commons. Lincoln is a copy of the Saint-Gaudens in Chicago. Mandela came in 2007, Gandhi in 2015, and in 2018 Gillian Wearing's Millicent Fawcett, holding a banner that reads Courage Calls to Courage Everywhere, the first woman here and the first statue in the square by a woman.
The rest are older and easy to walk past: six British prime ministers - Canning, Peel, Derby, Palmerston, Disraeli and Lloyd George - and Jan Smuts, twice prime minister of South Africa, done by Jacob Epstein in 1956 and striding forward with his hands behind his back.
